Use HeyMotion Graphics in DaVinci Resolve

Import your MP4 into DaVinci Resolve, cut it into your timeline, and key green overlays with the 3D Keyer or Qualifier.

Beginnerintegration guide

HeyMotion exports a standard MP4 (H.264 / AVC, VP9 fallback) at 30, which imports directly into DaVinci Resolve. This guide covers bringing the clip in, placing it on your timeline, and keying green overlays with Resolve's 3D Keyer (or the Qualifier on the Color page).

#Overview

Full-frame graphics play like any other clip in the Edit page. Overlay templates render on solid green (#00FF00); a keyer removes that green so only the graphic composites over your footage. There's no transparent export yet, so keying is how overlays are made see-through.

#Before You Begin

Export your graphic first — see Export an MP4. The file is in your Downloads folder as <template-id>-<timestamp>.mp4. Export in the aspect ratio your project uses. Export requires Google Chrome (desktop) or another Chromium browser.

#Step-by-Step Instructions

#1. Import the MP4

On the Media page (or by right-clicking the Media Pool on the Edit page), choose Import Media and select the exported .mp4. It appears in your Media Pool.

#2. Place it on the timeline

Drag the clip to a video track above your main footage on the Edit page timeline. Full-screen intros and end cards can sit on the base track instead.

#3. Resize and position

Select the clip and open the Inspector. Use Zoom (scale) and Position under Transform to size and place the graphic. The export is full-resolution, so scaling down stays crisp.

#4. Trim to length

Trim the clip's edges on the timeline, or use the blade (B), to set the exact on-screen duration.

#5. Key green overlays

For any overlay template (Lower-third tag, Subscribe bar, Corner badge, and the rest of the Overlays family), use one of these:

On the Edit page (3D Keyer via Fusion or the Effects):

  1. Add the 3D Keyer effect to the clip.
  2. Use its picker to drag across the green background; the keyer samples that color range.
  3. Refine the matte until the green disappears and edges stay clean.

On the Color page (Qualifier):

  1. Open the Qualifier and pick the green with the eyedropper.
  2. Widen or tighten the selection, then add an Alpha output / matte and invert so the green becomes transparent.
  3. Clean the edges with the qualifier's blur and denoise controls.
Note

HeyMotion does not export an alpha (transparent) channel today, so keying the green background is the supported way to composite overlays. Transparent export is planned.

#Export Recommendations

Export in the same aspect ratio as your Resolve project. The H.264 file imports cleanly; Resolve can generate optimized media if playback needs it, but it isn't required.

#Common Problems

  • Green spill on the graphic's edges — use a despill / edge-shrink control in the keyer or qualifier, or scale the overlay slightly so fringe sits off-frame.
  • The key looks fine on Edit but wrong on Color — make sure only one keyer is active; stacking a 3D Keyer and a Qualifier on the same clip can double-cut the matte.
  • Clip won't import — the export may have failed. See Troubleshoot a Failed Export.
